| The idea of chartering of the Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club came from then District Governor Jim Moffitt who wanted to start a new club during his year as District Governor. There hadn’t been a new Lions Club chartered in several years in his District 21C and he had heard his Cabinet Secretary Richard O. Brown mention several times that he wished he belonged to a club closer to his home in north Scottsdale. District Governor Jim and Lion Richard and his wife, Lion J. W. all belonged to the Scottsdale Lions Club that met at a restaurant in south Scottsdale.
Along with Lions Richard and J. W., another couple in the Scottsdale Lions Club, Lions Don and Florence Nichols also lived in the northern part of Scottsdale and said that they would help create a new club closer to home. At the first organizational meeting of the new club, Lion Richard suggested a name for the new club should be, “Scottsdale Arabian Nights Lions Club.” Lion Florence Nichols suggested “The Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club.” The organizers decided that would best fit and “The Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club” was the name for the new Lions Club. One of the other individuals responsible for bring in new members for the “Pride” was Lion Mike Pernatozzi who was a member of the Phoenix North Lions Club. He along with his wife Marge and daughter and sons, Michelle, Michael and Louis became charter members. Lion Mike was elected Charter President, Lion J. W. First VP and Charter Night Chairperson. Lion Richard O. Secretary, Lion Don Nichols was elected Charter Treasurer. The charter night was held at the Pinnacle Peak Patio on May 15th, 1992 and over 80 Lions, Lioness and guests celebrated the birth of the “Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club.” PDG Joe Preston was the master of ceremonies. Past International Director Ernie Rizek installed the charter officers and District Governor Jim Moffitt inducted the 22 charter members. The sponsoring Lions Club was the Scottsdale Papago Mountain Lions Club and President Ken Stewart presented gifts from other Lions Clubs. This new club adopted its own motto; “We are proud to be the newest and will strive to be the best.” A large banner stretching across the front of the room Charter Night. Taking this club motto serious, the “Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club” worked hard and was selected the “LIONS CLUB OF THE YEAR” in its first year of existence. In fact, the club won “Lions Club of the Year” three times out of its first five years. There were 64 clubs in the district that were competing for the honor. In its first eight years, the club had three District Governors elected from its membership and has awarded 11 Melvin Jones Fellowships. It celebrates anniversary annually in May and installs its incoming officers during this celebration. It holds an annual holiday party in January. The Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club has donated thousands of dollars annually to community projects, Lions state projects and Internationally to help prevent, preventable blindness and other worthy causes. |
